Bat Pats Sweep Eagles

In Tuesday’s doubleheader, the first two batters of the day reached base and scored for the visitors from Asbury University. But runs were hard to come by for the Eagles after that as they fell to the Bat Pats of St. Catharine 12-2 and 6-1.

St. Catharine (2-2) scored a run in the second inning of the opener and then took the leads for good with three runs in the third frame. CJ Englestad delivered the go-ahead run in the third inning with a two run double that scored Joey Xavier and Andrew Garcia who had singled.

Jake Waardenburg, 1-0, was the winning pitcher. The junior from Kalmath Falls, Ore. went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out five. Cory Klinger retired the final four batters of the game in order.

Xavier had three hits to lead the Bat Pats’ 12 hit attack. Garcia, Englestad and Jeremy Turpin each had two hits.

In the second game the Patriots had just five hits but strung three of those together in the third inning en route to the 6-1 over the Eagles who fell to 0-4. Garcia had a RBI double in the rally and Jeremy Turpin singled in a run.

Starting pitcher Eric Standafer, 1-0, picked up the victory as he allowed no runs on five hits in three innings of work. CJ Gant allowed one hit in 1 2/3 innings and Chase Dial allowed the only Asbury run (unearned) in his inning of relief. Brad Krohman, throwing for the first time since 2010 after having shoulder surgery allowed one hit over the final 1 1/3 innings.
