Team effort gives Patriots win over Cavaliers

In Mid-South Conference basketball Thursday, the St. Catharine College Patriots used a team effort to defeat the visiting Cavaliers from UVA-Wise. Nine different players scored for St. Catharine and five were in double figures in the 104-91 win.

The Cavaliers (8-12, 5-8) hung around for most of the game, trimming an 18 point deficit early into the second half down to nine points with 8:29 to play. But that was as close as they got as the Patriots improved to 11-10 overall and 7-5 in the conference.

Senior guard Brandon Johnson hit four of eight 3-point attempts to lead the Patriots with 21 points. Travis Wilkins was 9-11 from the field for 19 points. DeShawn Mitchell and Delonte Taylor each had 15 and Stefan Pope added 14 points and a team high 10 rebounds.

St. Catharine enjoyed its best shooting night of the season as they connected on 58 percent for the game that included 63 percent in the second half. That was better than they fared at the free throw line where they shot just 55 percent (16-29).

A Cavaliers’ guard triumvirate combined for 78 of their 91 points. That was led by Travis Berry’s 39 points. Norris Gaskins had 20 and Darius Smith 19.

The victory kept the Patriots in a tie for third place with Cumberlands in the conference. Lindsey Wilson is one-half game ahead in second place at 7-4 and Georgetown leads the MSC at 9-3.

Pikeville, the defending NAIA national champion, is currently one-half game behind the Patriots at 7-6. They will visit Lourdes Hall for a 4:00 game on Saturday.
