Patriots split DH with Mid-Continent

The visiting Mid-Continent Cougars won game two of a doubleheader in extra innings Monday at Edelen-Haydon field to salvage a split of the twin bill against Luther Bramblett’s Bat Pats.  Game one went to St. Catharine 7-3 while the Cougars took the nightcap 5-2.

The Bat Pats, 3-3, used a four-run second inning in the opener to break a 1-1 tie en route to the 7-3 win. Luis Zeledon, CJ Englestad and Joey Andrada had three consecutive singles in the rally that was aided by a Cougars’ walk and a wild pitch.

Zeledon, who had two hits along with Juan Moriel in the Bat Pats’ eight hit attack, triple to lead off the sixth inning and scored on a Mid-Continent error.

Javier Perez, 1-0, went four innings to pick up the victory. The senior southpaw from Henderson, Nev. Allowed one hit and one run. He walked one and fanned two. Ryan Rizzi allowed two runs on two hits in three innings of relief.

The Cougars, 3-9, took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning of the second game but the Bat Pats tied the score with back to back doubles by Jeremy Turpin and Moriel and a single by Tyler Mischel.

Mid-Continent broke the tie in the eighth inning with three runs off reliever Cory Klinger in his only inning of work. The Bat Pats put two runners on base with walks in the bottom of the inning but Cougars’ reliever Hunter Burge, 2-0, struck out the side to end the threat.

St. Catharine starter Matt Pavelich allowed one run, unearned, on two hits in four innings. Timothy Reed gave up one run on five hits in his three innings on the mound.

The Bat Pats collected just five hits for the game. In addition to the three consecutive safeties in the sixth frame, Andrew Garcia and Joey Xavier began the second inning with singles but that rally was snuffed out by a double play.

The game scheduled for Tuesday against Berea was postponed. It has been reschedule for Wednesday at 1:00 at Edelen-Haydon Field.
