Jim Coomer sees the St. Catharine College men’s tennis team as a work in progress. “I expect that we will be a lot better next year than we are now,” said Coomer who is directing the inaugural season of the Patriot tennis program.
But even in the first season the Patriots have been competitive and gained their first win over a Mid-South Conference opponent when they topped visiting UVA-Wise on march 3rd. St. Catharine won eight of nine matches on the day.
In singles matches Pablo Zamora won 6-4, 6-2. Andre Jacomini won 6-1, 6-2. Ethan Rowton won 6-2, 6-4 and Lazar Zivic won 6-0, 6-3.
The doubles teams of Rowton/Jacomini, Felipe Barrientos/ Zivic and Aaron Giles/Zamora all won their matches.
“Since we already had the overall match won at that point the other two singles matches were played to eight games instead of the best two of three sets,” explained Coomer. Barrientos won his match 8-0 and Giles, after battling to an 8-8 tie, lost a tiebreaker 5-7.
At the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday the Patriots fell 7-2. “We can play better than we did Saturday,” added Coomer. Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville are clearly the best in the conference but we should be able to compete against any of the other teams.”
Barrientos (6-3, 4-6, 10-5) and Rowton (2-6, 6-3, 10-8) won the two matches Saturday for the Patriots.
The Patriots are at home this Saturday to host Mid-South Conference opponent Pikeville.
