The St. Catharine College men’s soccer program has added a new face to its coaching staff as Daniel Byrd has joined the Patriots. Byrd will start the 2012 season with head coach Tim Wolz and first assistant Boyzz Khumalo.
Byrd comes to St. Catharine from Knoxville where he as head coach of the University of Tennessee men’s club team. He brings a wide array of experience both nationally and internationally.
Byrd was born in Zambia and lived there and in Mozambique Africa as a child of missionary parents. As a player, he played club soccer in Africa. During furloughs he played for the Kentucky ODP program as well as travel club teams. He was captain and lead goal scorer at Johnson University in Tennessee from 2000-2004 and earned all-region honors all four years.
He also played semi-professionally for the Cleveland City Stars in the USL in 2008. He has a broad base of coaching experience having coached all ages since 2006. He's coached several boy's and girl's high school and club teams in several states.
Byrd earned a bachelor of arts in Biblical Studies and Church Leadership from Johnson University and is currently working towards a master of arts in Leadership at Saint Catharine College.
“Daniel will bring intensity to our program,” said Wolz. “He is very knowledgeable about the game, having played at a high level worldwide. His experience will be a great addition to our program.”
