The St. Catharine softball team split all three of the doubleheaders played last week. Two of those wins were big for Holly Smith’s team as they came against two of the Mid-South Conference’s top teams. On Tuesday they topped first place Lindsey Wilson and Saturday they bettered second place Georgetown.
The Patriots now stand at 19-29 overall and 6-16 in Mid-South Conference play. Just two conference games remain as the Patriots play at home Tuesday against Cumberlands and then they conclude the regular season with two home doubleheaders against Oakland City (Thursday) and Brescia University (Sunday).
“We are playing much better and of course now is a good time to peak,” said Smith. “For the most part our pitching was much better all week. And we swung the bats pretty good against some of the best pitching in the conference.”
In Saturday’s opener at Georgetown (28-12, 14-4) the Patriots led 3-2 after three innings but saw the Tigers rally for five unanswered run in the 7-3 setback. Krystal Cammuse took the loss as she allowed all seven runs (five earned) in 4 1/3 innings. Amber Matteoli pitched shutout ball in relief.
Kasie Prather and Hagan Goldey each had two hits in the Patriots’ six hit attack. Brandi Hood had a double and two RBI’s.
In game two Saturday, St. Catharine used a five-run second inning to notch a 6-4 win. The big blast in the rally was a grand slam by Goldey who had two hits in the game. Kasie Prather, Taylor Steff and Cammuse also had two hits each.
Starting pitcher Ashley Cardenas went 3 2/3 innings before giving way to Amber Matteoli who was credited with the victory. Cardenas gave up all four runs on six hits. Matteoli surrendered just three hits in 3 1/3 scoreless innings.
