Senior team captain Jonathan Engstrom was named St Catharine College Student of the year this past Thursday at the Purple and Gold Awards Banquet. Also winning an award was Sophmore Brandon Huffman who was awarded Residence Life Person of the Year.
Below is the speech Dr Guthrie gave to introduce Jonathan Engstrom.
" Each month throughout the academic year, a student is honored as the St. Catharine College Student of the Month. From these outstanding students, one student is chosen to receive Student of the Year. This student exemplifies the mission of St. Catharine College and has distinguished him or herself in one or more of the following areas: Personal commitment to learning Outstanding leadership or service Significant involvement in cocurricular activities (e.g., student clubs and organizations, honor societies, athletics) Ability to successfully balance multiple life commitments (e.g., academics + parenting, job, community involvement) Extraordinary and exemplary personal qualities or inspirational character This is always a difficult decision for the student, faculty, and staff selection committee as they have so many outstanding students from whom to select. This year the committee selected a student who we believe truly exemplifies the mission of St. Catharine College. I have been fortunate to be able to present this award many times and I am typically presenting to a student who has been in the spotlight for a number of years and therefore, not a surprise to many. Student of the year is frequently a student who has been very visible in making contributions or holding leadership roles. This year I am presenting to a student who has not been in the spotlight as this student prefers to contribute in a quieter way, behind the scenes and without fanfare. I am quite sure that accepting this honor tonight will be somewhat of a struggle as humility is a genuine character trait of this student. Yet I am quite sure that most in this room will know the student and agree that the committee’s choice for student of the year 2012 is one that is inarguably appropriate. In the words of his nominator, “he has been a wonderful representative of St. Catharine College and a model for what the ideal student at SCC should be.” A faculty member and mentor said he “is a renaissance man, interested in a plethora of things, comfortable in his own skin, passionate about SCC—both the past and future of the College, bright, erudite, articulate, and extraordinarily musically talented. This student has been a member of our men’s soccer team and a team captain; he has also been involved on campus in the Fine Arts Club and the Dominican Young Adults. He has served on the College’s Stewardship Committee and become involved in issues of urban homelessness. He has been a part of an informal drumming ensemble that has provided music for many campus events and convocations and can frequently be found with his guitar playing music on campus. He has a positive outlook and sets a healthy role model for his peers. The student of the year is a 5th year senior from Frankfort , KY who will receive his bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts—Music in May. He has maintained a grade point average that has achieved Dean’s List several semesters and President’s List with a 4.0 in Fall 2011. The Student of the Year for 2012 is Jonathan Engstrom."
