On the bowling lanes, Larry Luvisi has the Alley Pats headed in the right direction. After a fifth place finish in the NAIA National Invitational their first year, the St. Catharine men slipped to 12th place (out of 23 teams) this season against much stiffer competition. The women’s team finished seventh in a 16 team field.
“We lost our number one and three bowler on the men’s side so we basically had a JV team bowling in the national tournament,” said Luvisi. “But they hung in there and made a decent showing. We have had a good recruiting class for both the men and women so we should be improved next season.”
While bowling will not become a NAIA varsity sport until 2013-2014, Luvisi is hoping the Mid-South Conference gets a head start on that in 2012-2013. “At the annual conference meeting all of the bowling coaches are going to be there to make a pitch for a conference championship this coming year. We already have the tournaments in place with eight conference teams participating.”
