The St. Catharine College volleyball team opened its third season under Coach Adam Stevenson with a four game tournament at IU-east in Richmond, Ind. last weekend. And after dropping the first three matches the Patriots were able to get in the winning column in the final match.
“It was pretty tough competition to start the season,” said Stevenson. “IU-East is ranked 25th nationally.”
The Patriots opened the season Friday with a tough 3-0 (29-27, 27-25, 27-25) loss to IU-Southeast. Allie Southard and Rebecca Just led the Patriots’ offense with 19 and 11 kills respectively. Casey Stone led St. Catharine in block with four for the match.
“We got to 24 points first in very set but just couldn’t close it out,” said Stevenson. “We led by at least four points in every set.”
Friday’s second match was against host IU-East which the Patriots lost 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-15). Just had eight kills and Southard seven.
Saturday’s action began with a 3-0 loss to Bethel College (25-15, 25-15, 25-17). Just led the team with six kills and Stone had four. The Patriots had their worst match of the tournament at the net where they hit for just a .102 percentage.
But St. Catharine left the tournament on a positive note with a 3-2 win over Huntington College (24-26, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19, 15-12). Southard and Stone had 14 and 11 kills respectively for the Patriots who hit at a .145 clip. Just led the team in blocks with three.
“We just needed to be more consistent with our passing,” added Stevenson. “But we have to play a lot of young players due to losing two starters in the pre-season.”
The patriots returned to action last night at IU-Southeast. They travel to Asbury on Friday before their home opener next Tuesday against Midway College.
