A raucous crowd was rocking in Lourdes Hall Wednesday as the Patriot volleyball team stormed to a 25-21 first set win over the visiting Georgetown Tigers. But as quickly as the crowd roared, they were silenced just as fast as Georgetown took the next three sets to win the match.
The Patriots, 4-9, broke a 21-21 tie in the first set with four consecutive points for the win. Following a Patriot timeout a service error by Georgetown made the score 22-21. Then, a spectacular dig by Randa Murphy and a Casey Stone block made the score 23-21. A block by Maggie Goben followed by a Tigers’ error ended the set to the delight of the large home crowd.
In the second set the Tigers led 17-13 but went on a 6-1 run and coasted to a 25-18 win. Same was the case in set three as Georgetown, 3-2, went on two 5-0 runs to pull away to a 25-13 win.
In the fourth set the Patriots stayed close early, trailing 7-5, but couldn’t overcome the Tigers’ strong hitting in losing 25-14.
Wednesday’s match was the conference opener for both teams. St. Catharine is idle until September 11th when they travel to Columbia to take on Lindsey Wilson in another Mid-South Conference match.
