When the visiting RedStorm of the University of Rio Grande came to Barber Field for the men’s Mid-South Conference soccer match Wednesday it took them just 12 seconds to score the first goal of the game. That came on a breakaway by Richard Isberner who scored four of the visitors’ goals in a 5-0 decision.
But while the final seemed to be lopsided in favor of Rio Grande, the # 2 team in the nation, the Patriots did battle throughout with a few good looks to score. Overall the RedStorm had seven shots on goal, and 22 total shots, while St. Catharine fired three on frame among the nine total shots.
Isberner followed his early goal with his second goal 15 minutes into the game and his header off a corner kick made the score 3-0 at halftime. Ten minutes into the second half the RedStorm (8-1, 4-0) made the score 4-0 on Isberner’s final goal.
Oliver Hewitt-Fisher made the score 5-0 in the 68th minute as the Patriots fell to 5-5 overall an 1-2 in the conference.
St. Catharine will be back in Mid-South Conference action Saturday with a game at Pikeville.
