In Mid-South Conference action Saturday the Patriots traveled to the University of Pikeville and came away with a tough 2-1 victory on a rain soaked, sloppy field.
The victory gave the Patriots a 2-2 conference record (6-5 overall) which puts them in fifth place in the conference, just one game behind Campbellsville and Cumberlands who are tied for third. The Patriots will play a pivotal game at Campbellsville Tuesday and will host Cumberlands on October 10th.
In the win at Pikeville (0-5, 0-3) the Patriots fell behind 1-0 when Chase Johnson scored for the Bears 12 minutes into the game. But Ashley Woods scored the first of his two goals nine minutes before halftime to tie the score. Just two minutes into the second half Woods scored the final goal of the match and the Patriots held on for the 2-1 win.
“I was able to get the first one into the top corner,” explained Woods, a sophomore from Manchester, England. “I kicked the second right at the goalkeeper but it went right between his legs.”
SC goalkeeper C.J. Powell had five saves as the Bears fired six shots on frame. St. Catharine had 10 shots on goal, four by Woods and three by Sam Kpoh, but goalkeeper Thomas Sheldon turned away eight of those attempts. Overall, St. Catharine outshot Pikeville 30-13.
