The JV Baseball club defended the "Pumpkin" this weekend, going 3-1 in the round robin Fall JV Classic at Lindsey Wilson College. The Pat's beat Asbury University 4-3 in the championship game on Saturday. Three teams finished with a 2-1 record in pool play and the Patriots received the #1 seed due to allowing just 9 runs. Asbury allowed 10 runs and LWC allowed 11.
"It's been a great few days for our younger players," commented JV Skipper Terry Davis. "They competed well and wanted to keep the Pumpkin with us. It's great for all the teams - to get our young guys game experience in a competitive tournament setting."
Freshman catcher Brandon Roberts broke open a tie game in the 5th inning with a 2-RBI double to right center field. Lamont Calloway and Trevor Schneider both added RBI's and Schneider went 2-2 with a run and a double. Tyler Barrick picked up the win against Asbury in relief. He tossed 3.1 innings and allowed just one run. Tyler Shewmaker earned the save with a scoreless 7th.
The Patriots opened up the tournament with a 4-1 win against Campbellsville University. Dylan Shoffner picked up the win with a complete game gem. Shoffner had a perfect game into 5th. He allowed a run on 3 hits and tallied 9 K's. Calloway went 2-3 with a homer and 2 RBI's. Drew Kissel and Zach Harmon both added 2 hit games.
The Patriots scored 4 runs in the 6th inning to beat Asbury 6-3. Cody Kollenberg went 1-2 with 2 runs and 2 RBI's to lead SC. James Dyer picked up the win, tossing 5 innings. He allowed 2 runs on 1 hit. James McNiff finished the game in relief.
The lone loss in the tournament came to Lindsey Wilson, 6-5. Roberts went 2-4 for the only Bat Pat with more than one knock. Jonathan Reeves picked up the loss in relief, allowing an unearned run in the 7th.
The "Pumpkin" is the traveling trophy, given to the winning team each year. The Patriots have kept the Pumpkin in St. Catharine for the last 3 years and won the tournament for the fourth straight year.
