The final stats will show a loss for St. Catharine after the Lindsey Wilson College visited Lourdes Hall on Tuesday. But John Rogers’ Patriots did not go down without a battle, losing in four sets to the Blue Raiders who received votes for the NAIA top 25.
“We played with great effort,” said Rogers whose team fell to 8-16 overall and 2-8 in the Mid-South Conference. “They have a good team and they hurt us on the one rotation.”
The Patriots started out hurting the Blue Raiders as they took the first set 26-24. The second set was close throughout before the Blue Raiders (17-8, 7-2) prevailed. The visitors also took the third set 25-14.
St. Catharine found new energy in the fourth set when they bolted to a 7-2 lead. But Lindsey Wilson answered with a 16-5 run to lead 18-11 and the Patriots never could regain the momentum in falling 25-13.
In perhaps her best match of the season, Rebecca Just had 13 kills for the Patriots and hit a .370 percentage. Allie Southard hit .286 with 11 kills while Casey Stone had 10 kills.
The loss dropped the Patriots into ninth place in the 11 team MSC. They will travel next to UVA-Wise on Friday where they will play Bluefield College at 6:15 and the host cavaliers at 8:30.
“Both of those teams are directly in front of us in the conference so they are big matches if we hope to make it to the eight team conference tournament,” Rogers said.
