St. Catharine Women's Soccer went on the road to finish a stretch of three games in 4 days and came home with two non-conference wins over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Patriots took on Brescia University for the first time since a 1-0 loss in 2009. The outcome was much different this time as Kelsey Pendleton scored the games first two goals. At the 9 minute mark, Pendleton took a pass from Krista Russell and slotted it behind the Bearcat goalkeeper to open the scoring. Three minutes later Sara Herbert would pass a ball up to Pao Martinez who redirected it to Pendleton for the shot and a 2 goal lead that would remain until halftime.
The second half would continue much the same with Sara Herber scoring off a Sarah Castillo cross in the 54th minute. In the 70th minute Krista Russell was taken down in the box. She finished the resulting penalty kick for the fourth goal of the day. Sarah Castillo capped off the scoring for the day when she took a pass from Russell, beat a defender and knocked it home to finish off the day with a 5-0 Patriot victory.
On Sunday, the Patriots took on the Pomeroy's of St. Mary of the Woods College in western Indiana. Again, Kelsey Pendleton scored the first goal of the match only five minutes in off a pass from Chelsey Landrum. Five minutes later, Krista Russell would beat two players and hammer home a 16 yard shot to make the score 2-0. Sara Herbert got into the action in the 18th minute and gave the Patriots a 3-0 lead at the half with a goal assisted by Kelsey Pendleton.
The second period would be much the same as Chelsey Landrum scored a goal after a long dribbling run only 2 minutes in. Krista Russell and Macy Higdon would each add an unassisted goal to the tally in the 60th and 61st minute, respectively, for the 6-0 victory.
Patriot Goalkeeper Maggie Grieser made 9 saves over 180 minutes to earn shutouts in both matches.
Krista Russell's three goals and two assists on the weekend ran her goal tally for the season to 10 and her career total to 50 goals. Russell, who became the Patriot's career leading scorer after a 21 goal explosion during her sophomore campaign in 2010, sets a new standard for career goals at 50. She has now scored double digit goals in three of her four seasons in the program. Krista is also the career leader in assists for the Patriot's Women's Soccer program with 21.
The two victories this weekend push the Patriot's recored to 10-4-2 on the season. The 10 victories is a record for wins in a season for the Patriot Women's Soccer Program and the first time in history that the team has posted double digit wins in a single season.
