To secure a place in the Mid-South Conference volleyball tournament next month, the St. Catharine College Patriots knew they must win two matches Friday at the University of Virginia-Wise. And John Rogers’ team did that in convincing fashion.
The Patriots (10-16, 4-8) began Friday evening with a 3-0 win (25-20, 25-13, 25-18) over Bluefield College. With no time to rest, the Patriots maintained their momentum with a 3-0 win against the host UVA-Wise team.
“We played great,” said Rogers. “Everything went well, especially considering the long drive we had and the fact that we had to play back to back matches.”
The two wins came after the Patriots had lost earlier in the week, Tuesday at home, to Lindsey Wilson College. St. Catharine’s 4-8 conference mark leaves them in a tie for seventh place with UVA-Wise. One conference match remains and that is next Tuesday at home against University of the Cumberlands.
Against Bluefield (11-15, 2-7) the Patriots got a one-two punch from Allie Southard and Rebecca Just with 12 and 10 kills respectively. Southard hit .688 and Just .182. Randa Murphy led the team in digs with 18 and Lauren Bowling had 11.
Against Wise (7-21, 4-8) the Patriots won 25-15, 25-22, 25-17. Southard and Casey Stone had nine kills each while hitting .318 and .563. Murphy led the team in digs with 11.
