The Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders entered the Mid-South Conference quarterfinal game against the visiting St. Catharine College Patriots as the number one team in the nation. And following Saturday night’s game in Columbia they will remain the top team, but not without a few anxious moments.
Lindsey Wilson(17-1), whose only loss was to MSC member Rio Grande, won the game 7-2 but were challenged early by the Patriots whose season ended at 7-11. Eddy Campbell scored for the Blue Raiders four minutes into the game but Isaac Blanford’s goal for the Patriots tied the game in the 11th minute.
That 1-1 score would remain for the next 20 minutes until Leogang Moloto gave Lindsey Wilson a 2-1 lead. They added another goal three minutes later and took a 3-1 lead into halftime.
The lead bulged to 5-1 when the Blue Raiders got goals from Albert Edwards and Keletso Mosime in the 70th and 74th minute. Sawyer Abshire made the score 5-2 in the 77th minute but two late goals, one with two seconds on the clock, gave Lindsey Wilson the final 7-2 victory.
St. Catharine had just four shots on goal but two of them found the net. Lindsey Wilson had 16 shots on goal and Patriot goalkeeper C.J. Powell had nine saves.
Lindsey Wilson will play in the semifinals today on their home field against sixth seeded Cumberland University who upset Campbellsville 2-1 in the quarterfinals. The other semifinal game pits Rio Grande against University of the Cumberlands.
