The Patriots will go into the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Friday as the seventh seeded team in the eight team field. John Rogers’ team could have found themselves as the lowest seed overall had it not been for Tuesday’s victory at Cumberland University where the Patriots won 3-1.
St. Catharine (12-18, 5-10) eeked out a 25-23 in the first set but the Bulldogs (8-26, 1-14) bit back in winning the second set 26-24. The Patriots then found their stride in winning the next two sets 25-13, 25-19.
Freshman Rebecca Just and sophomore Allie Southard continued their strong play of late at the net. Just had 20 kills and hit .273 while Southard had 12 kills with a sparkling .524 hitting percentage. Randa Murphy, among the top ten in the nation in digs, had another solid match with 21 digs.
The Patriots hits .246 a s a team while Cumberland ended at .221. Southard had four of the seven blocks for St. Catharine while the Bulldogs had just three blocks.
The SC victory means they will play second seeded Lindsey Wilson (25-12, 12-3) in the opening quarterfinal match of the Mid-South Conference tournament. That match will start at 9:00 Friday morning at the MidAmerican Sports center in Louisville.
The semifinals of the MSC tournament will be Saturday morning at 10:00 and noon with the championship match at 5:00 Saturday.
