LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- St. Catharine's Carlos Hernandez is the Mid-South Conference Baseball Player of the Week and Cumberland's Anthony Gomez is the MSC Pitcher of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.
The awards are the first of the season handed out by the Mid-South.
Hernandez ended the week hitting .588 (10-for-17) with three doubles and five RBIs to earn the conference's player of the week honor. The Fresno, Calif., senior, helped the Patriots win all five of their games last week while collecting multiple hits in three games. Hernandez hit safely in all five games.
In his best game, Hernandez went 4-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, one RBI and three stolen bases in a 7-3 win over Huntington (Ind.). In the second game of the doubleheader with Huntington, he added two more hits and another RBI in an 8-6 win. For the week, Hernandez amassed a .765 slugging percentage and a .650 on-base percentage as the Patriots leadoff batter.
St. Catharine improves to 10-6 on the season with last week's perfect week.
Gomez hurled a complete-game shutout to beat No. 20-ranked Georgetown to earn the conference's top weekly pitching honor. The Norwalk, Calif., junior allowed just three hits in his nine innings. Gomez struck out six Tiger hitters while issuing just two free passes.
With his efforts, Gomez improves to 3-0 on the season with a 0.43 earned run average. The opposition is batting just .114 against him. Cumberland moves to 8-4-1 overall on the season and 2-1 in the Mid-South Conference.
The next baseball players of the week awards are scheduled to be announced on Monday, March 4.
