Following Monday’s regular season finales, Mid-South Conference officials announced the tournament brackets for the MSC tournament that runs Thursday through Sunday at the Frankfort Convention Center.

The Patriot women (19-10, 11-9), losers of the final regular season game at Georgetown, will enter the tournament as the fifth seed. That will pit Lena Bramblett’s team against Shawnee State (22-8, 13-7) in Thursday’s second game that will begin at 4:00.

In regular season action the Patriots split the two games with the Bears. In the game played at St. Catharine, Machera Calhoun hit a running 18-foot shot at the buzzer of the first overtime to give the Patriots a 80-78 win. In the rematch in Portsmouth, the Bears prevailed 75-63.

Shawnee State center Schera Sampson had 26 points in each game and Allanah Sheets had 16 in each contest.

“We obviously need to do a better job inside against her and try to keep Sheets form getting open looks outside,” said Patriot assistant Sara Sexton.

If the Patriots get past the Bears they will play Saturday at 2:00 against the winner of the game between top seeded Cumberland (Tenn.) and eight seed Lindsey Wilson. The championship game is slated for Sunday at 2:30.

For J.T. Burton’s men’s team (13-13, 9-11), who also lost the final regular season at Georgetown, they will enter as the seventh seed which will have them playing second seeded Pikeville (24-5, 15-5) Friday at 6:00.
Each team won a game in the regular season, Pikeville winning at home 87-69 and St. Catharine taking the rematch in Lourdes Hall 93-90.

SC assistant Brandon Johnson is aware of what the Patriots need to do to advance to the semifinals. “Hopefully we can contain Trevor Setty and Jamar Briscoe and make the other guys beat us,” said Johnson.

Setty had score 26 and 25 in the two games and Briscoe had 28 and 18.

If the Patriots advance to the second round they will play the winner of the game between third seeded Georgetown (22-7, 14-6) and sixth seed Cumberlands (19-11, 10-10). That game will be Saturday at 8:00. The championship game is Sunday at 2:30.
