The Patriots scored early and often in Tuesday’s doubleheader in Mayfield, Ky. against the Cougars of Mid-Continent University. And, while the St. Catharine offense was on fire, the Patriots’ pitching caged the Cougars in sweeping the twin bill by scores of 17-2 and 10-1.
St. Catharine (17-7) slugged 14 hits and took advantage of seven walks and five Mid-Continent errors in the 17-2 win in game one. Eric Standafer had four hits including a solo homer. Josh Whitmer also had a solo shot and KC Mejia, Carlos Hernandez, Joey Andrada and Trevor Schneider had two hits apiece. Andrada had four RBI’s while Mejia and Schneider each knocked in three.
Ryan Rizzi (2-2) pitched four innings to earn the victory. He allowed five hits and two runs while walking two and striking out four. Matt Wagner pitched retired all nine batters he faced in three innings of relief, fanning three to earn his first save of the year.
In the second game the Bat Pats scored three times in the first inning and rolled to the 10-1 win. Joey Xavier had three hits including two home runs and three RBI’s. Carlos Hernandez had two hits. Mejia and Tyler Mischel each had two RBI’s.
Andrew Nelson (3-0) pitched four scoreless inning to get the win. He allowed just two hits. Trenton Claunch and CJ Gant each pitched one scoreless inning in relief and Cory Klinger gave up one run on one hit in the seventh frame.
The Patriots return to Mid-South Conference play this weekend as Bluefield College visits for three games. Friday’s single game begins at 1:00 and Saturday’s doubleheader starts at noon.
