The day started well for the St. Catharine College softball team in Columbia when they scored five runs in the first inning of the Mid-South Conference doubleheader against Lindsey Wilson College. But the Patriots never scored again in taking an 8-5 loss in the opener and a 9-0 defeat in game two.
The Blue Raiders (18-4, 4-2) wasted no time in answering the Patriots’ first inning outburst as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. They added their final five runs in the fifth inning.
Starting pitcher Ashley Hardin surrendered all eight runs in pitching 4.1 innings. Brittany McKee allowed one hit in 1.2 innings of relief.
Five players had one hit apiece, all singles, for St. Catharine. Shelbi Thornhill, Chelcie Rein and Hillary Dwyer each had one RBI in the first inning rally.
The Patriots (6-8, 0-2) also managed just five hits in the 9-0 loss in game two. Rein had two of those including a double while Hagan Goldey, Brandi Hood and Taylor Steff had one each.
Lindsey Wilson had 11 hits as they ended the game in the sixth inning with three runs. McKee went the distance in the circle for the Patriots, allowing the nine earned runs while striking out three and walking four.
St. Catharine continues conference play Saturday with a doubleheader at Bluefield College in Virginia.
