The St. Catharine College Baseball Fall Classic opened in exciting fashion yesterday with Team Davis plating 9 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to take the first game of the best of five series, 12-8. Team Allen controlled the majority of the game until the Allen bullpen along with clutch hitting by Team Davis allowed the lead to disappear.
Team Allen jumped ahead in the top of the first with a 2 run homer by senior catcher Adam Blair (Lebanon, KY). Blair added a bases clearing triple in the top of the second for a 5-0 lead. Team Davis scratched across an unearned run in the bottom half on a Lamont Calloway (Louisville, KY) sac fly. Corey Klei (Edgewood, KY) knocked in a run on a sac fly in the 3rd inning and a Devin Luckett (Louisville, KY) RBI single in the fifth stretched the Allen lead to 8-1.
Team Davis began to chip away in the bottom of the 5th with a solo homer by Doug Crawford (Louisville, KY) and a RBI single by Patrick Jones (Lexington, KY) to trim the lead to 8-3. After Team Davis pitcher Shannon Murphy (Union, KY) tossed up a zero in a bases loaded jam in the top half of the 6th, the offense took advantage of 3 walks and 2 hit batters and erupted for 9 runs. An RBI single by Bubba Hughes (Cincinnati, OH) started the inning and Calloway knocked him in with a single as well. Another RBI single by Carlos Hernandez (Fresno, CA) and 3 straight free bases and an error set up the bases clearing double by senior catcher Alan Stoupa (McLean, VA) for the final score of 12-8.
Tony Krohman (Florence, KY) ended up suffering the loss and Murphy picked up the win. Senior closer Brad Krohman (Florence, KY) hammered the door, striking out the side in the top of the 7th. Matt Pavelich (Vail, AZ) tossed the 5 plus innings for Team Allen and allowed 5 runs, 3 earned. He had 7 K's and scattered 7 hits.
Game 2 in the best of five series, is today (Thursday) at 3:15.
