The St. Catharine College softball team climbed over the .500 mark Wednesday with two wins at non-conference rival Union College in Barbourville, Ky. Holly Smith’s squad took the first game 7-3 and won game two 11-9 to improve to 10-8 for the season.
The Bulldogs (10-12) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one off Patriot starter Ashley Hardin. But St. Catharine evened the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth frame.
Union knotted the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth but the patriots answered with a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh for the 7-3 win.
Hagan Goldey had four of the Patriots’ 11 hits including a double and Emily Fenwick had two hits. Seven different players knocked in a run each in the victory.
Hardin (4-2) allowed two earned runs on 10 hits in going the distance in the circle. She did not walk a batter and struck out three.
The Bulldogs took a 7-2 lead after three innings of the second game and still led 9-4 after four innings. But the Patriots scored three in the fifth, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh inning to post the 11-9 comeback win.
The Patriots had 13 hits as Goldey, Fenwick, Brandi Hood and Chelcie Rein had two each. Goldey, Shelbi Thornhill, Brittany Mckee and Grace Mills each had a double in the game. Goldey knocked in three runs while Mckee and Thornhill had two RBI’s apiece.
McKee started in the circle but lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Hardin picked up the win in relief as she gave up three runs on eight hits with one strikeout and no walks.
The Patriots are back in action Saturday with a Mid-South Conference doubleheader at home against Pikeville. The Bears are 3-5 in MSC play and 6-11 overall. St. Catharine is 2-2 in the conference.
