The St. Catharine College Patriot Baseball club (26-11, 7-5 MSC) split a conference double header with Rio Grande on Saturday, winning 9-5 and dropping the night cap 5-3. The Patriots took the series, winning two of three on the weekend.
In the opener, freshman lefty Dylan Shoffner continued his string of quality starts with a 14 K performance in route to his fifth win of the year. Shoffner tossed 7 innings, allowing 2 unearned runs on 2 hits. Cody Alvey and Cory Klinger each tossed a inning of relief.
The Patriots banged out 14 hits with Tyler Mischel leading the way with a 3-4 day. Mischel scored a run and added a RBI. Joey Xavier went 2-4 with a homer and 4 RBI's. Carlos Hernandez, Adrian Garcia and Trevor Schneider each had 2 hit days.
In the closer, Andrew Nelson suffered his first loss of the year. He tossed 5 innings, allowing 4 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits. Trenton Claunch threw the final 2 innings giving up a run on 1 hit.
The Pats tallied 9 hits in the game. Jeremy Turpin had 2 base knocks and a RBI. KC Mejia had a 2 hit game and Xavier added 2 more base hits. Josh Whitmer went 1-2 with a homer.
The Patriots play at home Tuesday when they welcome Berea College for a single game. On Wednesday, the Patriots travel to Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, IN for a DH.
