The St. Catharine Patriot Baseball team (27-11) came from behind Tuesday and beat Berea College on a walkoff fielder's choice in the bottom of the tenth inning, 10-9. The Pats scored four runs in the bottom of the 8th to go up 9-7, but gave two runs back in the top of the ninth to force extra innings. Senior outfielder CJ Engelstad scored the game winner on a Eric Standafer grounder to third base.
CJ Gant got his first start of the year and tossed 7 strong innings. The junior gave up 5 runs in the first 2 innings (3 earned) and settled down for the middle innings. He allowed 8 hits and 7 runs - 4 earned. Cody Alvey tossed 1 inning of relief, punching out 2 and giving up 2 unearned runs. Andrew Nelson hurled the final 2 innings of relief work and picked up the win. He punched out 4.
At the dish, the Bat Pats banged out 15 hits on the afternoon. KC Mejia, who doubled over Englestad in the 10th inning went 4-6 with 2 doubles, a run and RBI. Engelstad went 3-6, scoring 3 times and knocking in 2. Carlos Hernandez went 2-6 with 2 runs scored and Adrian Garcia had a 2-4 day, scoring twice and driving in 2.
The Patriots are back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, in New Albany, IN to face Indiana University Southeast. The double header will begin a 2:00.
