It took extra innings to do it, but the Patriots were able to edge visiting Montreat College in the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader by a 6-5 score. That followed the 6-2 St. Catharine victory in the opener over the Cavaliers.
In game one, the Patriots (22-26) broke a 2-2 tie in the second inning en route to the 6-2 win. Krystal Cammuse had three hits and Hagan Goldey, Brandi Hood, Taylor Steff and Shelbi Thornhill each had two hits as the Patriots collected 12 hits.
Ashley Hardin pitched five strong innings to get the victory. She allowed five hits, the only runs coming on a two-run homer by Catirina Highley in the second inning. Hardin struck out two and walked none. Cammuse pitched the final two innings, giving up one hit.
Game two went to extra innings tied 3-3. Both teams scored a run in the eighth inning and Montreat (3-29) took a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth.
But the Patriots won it with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Starting with Hardin at second base due to the international tiebreaking rules, Hillary Dwyer laid down a sacrifice bunt but reached base on a Cavalier error and Hardin scored. Goldey bunted to send Dwyer to third base where she scored when hood singled sharply down the left field line.
Chelcie Rein was 4-4 and hood had three hits in the Patriots’ 10 hit attack. Brittany McKee went the distance in the circle for St. Catharine. The freshman right-hander gave up five runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
The Patriots conclude the regular season at home Monday with a Mid-South Conference doubleheader against Campbellsville University. First pitch is at 2:00.
