Playing their first NCAA D-I opponent of the season, St. Catharine dropped a 15-3 decision Monday at Morehead State. The loss left Luther Bramblett’s team with a final regular season record of 36-19 as they prepare for the Mid-South Conference tournament this weekend.
The Eagles (13-28) broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning to make the score 6-0. They added three more runs in each the fifth and sixth innings, one more in the seventh and plated two more in the eighth.
The Bat Pats scored all three of their runs in the sixth inning. CJ Englestad opened the inning with a double and scored on an Adrian Garcia single. Tyler Mischel then connected for a two-run homer.
Starting pitcher Ryan Rizzi (5-3) took the loss although he was the most effective pitcher of the day for the Bat Pats who sent six pitchers to the hill. Rizzi allowed one run on three hits in three innings. He walked one and fanned one. The five pitchers who followed walked eight batters and gave up 13 hits.
It is now on to Kingsport, Tenn. for the MSC tournament. St. Catharine, a seven seed, will play #2 seed Georgetown in the tournament opener at 7:00 Thursday. The two teams did not meet in the regular season. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Lindsey Wilson/ Cumberlands (Ky.) game. The tournament is scheduled to conclude Sunday.
