PATRIOT BASEBALL PICKED FOURTH IN MSC POLL

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville University and University of Rio Grande are the preseason baseball favorites in the Mid-South Conference, according to the MSC Coaches' Preseason poll released today by the conference.

Campbellsville -- the defending regular season champions -- are projected to win the West Division, while Rio Grande -- the reigning MSC Tournament champs -- are predicted to win the East Division.

This season marks the first time Mid-South Conference baseball will use divisional play. The conference expanded to 10 full-time members in July after Shawnee State University and the University of Virginia's College at Wise joined the league as full members.

EAST DIVISION

Rio Grande received 16 voting points, including four of the five first-place votes from the East Division coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

The RedStorm is coming off a 48-13 season, including a 20-7 conference mark in their first year in the MSC in 2009. Shawnee State is predicted to finish second in the East after receiving 13 voting points, including the final first-place vote. UVa.-Wise is third in the preseason ranking with nine voting points, West Virginia University Tech is fourth with eight voting points and Pikeville College concludes the East Division poll with four voting points.

WEST DIVISION

Campbellsville is the favorite in the West Division with 16 voting points, including four first-place votes. The Tigers were 42-22 a season ago, including 22-5 in conference play to win their second straight regular season title. Georgetown College is projected to finish second in the West with 13 voting points and the final first-place vote. University of the Cumberlands received nine voting points to finish third in the balloting, while St. Catharine College (8 voting points) and Lindsey Wilson College (4) complete the West Division.

The 2011 baseball season begins in early February with the first conference games slated for early March. The Mid-South Conference Tournament is scheduled to begin the April 22 with four play-in series at host sites. The four series' winners advance -- along with the divisional champions -- to a double elimination tournament April 28-30 at Campbellsville.
