The Patriot Women's Soccer team continued their season on the road Saturday with a trip to Indianapolis to play the Knights of Marian University.
In a hard fought, end to end battle during the first half, neither team was able to put a serious threat on goal until Chelsey Landrum pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area and slotted home a shot to put the Patriots up 1-0. Less than a minute later, Courtney Hagedorn corralled a ball cleared by the Marian defense and lofted a shot over the Marian goalkeeper from 26 yards out that extended the lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.
Marian came out strong in the second half and pressured the Patriot goal trying to cut into the lead. Twelve minutes in, and against the run of play, Savannah Gregorchik ran onto a through-ball and found herself with a one-on-one with Marian's 'keeper. She cut left and got off a shot that would have extended the lead to 3 but instead it caromed off the goalpost and back into play.
In the 67th minute, Marian managed to cut the lead in half on a goal by Kelsey Pauley. However, that would be as close as the Knights would come as the St. Catharine defense held strong the last 23 minutes and the Patriots secured the victory.
The Patriots will be in action again on Monday, September 9th at 4pm for their Varsity home opener versus Asbury University.
