The St. Catharine Patriots stayed busy this week, hosting five home contests and sending one team on the road.

The week kicked off with the Lady Patriots’ soccer team hosting the Asbury Eagles. Highlighted by keeper Lindsey Vinson’s nine saves and Courtney Anderson’s five shots, three on goal, the Patriots were unable to capitalize on their opportunities and fell to 3-1 on the year.

Tuesday presented a Patriot double header with the men’s soccer team tangling with the Cougars of Mid-Continent and the volleyball Patriots rocking Lourdes Hall against the Tigers of Georgetown. Both games presented exciting moments, first with Marvin Wesselburg’s goal off the assist from Ashley Woods to keep the Patriots within striking distance, followed by the magnificent performance of Brandon Campbell and his eight saves in his first varsity start of the year. Tuesday night was capped off with an exhilarating battle in Lourdes Hall, where the Lady Patriots took #7 Georgetown College to five sets led by the arm of Allie Southard and her 12 kills. The students in Lourdes Hall created an environment rivaled by few to help the Patriots fight to the very end.

After their battle with the Tigers the volleyball Patriots had a bitter taste in their mouth and they were out for revenge. Unfortunately for the Thoroughbreds of NCAA Division 2 Kentucky State, they had to face the Patriots on Wednesday evening. After dropping the first set 27-25 the Patriots stormed back and dominated Kentucky State to win 3-1 and move to 8-5, 2-1 MSC. Led by the 14 kills of Rebecca Just the Patriots were able to put their season back on track.

The pinnacle of the week came on Thursday when the soccer Patriots hosted the Pikeville Bears for their conference openers. The day kicked off with the Lady Patriots winning in thrilling fashion off the toe of Michelle Dunaway with 45.7 seconds to go in the second half. The win propelled the Patriots to a 4-1, 1-0 MSC record. If the first thriller wasn’t enough the Patriot men had the remedy with part two of the thriller at the Barber, when they hosted the Bears in the nightcap with yet another one point contest. The Patriots were led by goals from Tyler McKenty and Ashley Woods.

With the week coming to a close the volleyball Patriots will hit the road this weekend to travel to Oakland City University in Indiana to face the Mighty Oaks. The men’s soccer team will host Salem International at home Sunday at 1 PM. The cross country team will hit the road to travel to Centre College and they will be joined in Danville by the men’s tennis team, who will be kicking their 2013 campaign off at the Centre College Invitational.
