The St. Catharine Volleyball Patriots (11-9, 4-4 MSC) traveled to Williamsburg, Ky., Friday night to face the University of the Cumberland’s (10-6, 4-4 MSC) in the battle of the Patriots.
After getting back on track in the Mid-South Conference against Rio Grande the St. Catharine Patriots were looking to extend their streak to two when they faced a sliding Cumberland’s squad. The Patriots of the Cumberland’s were coming off a loss to Georgetown, and things wouldn’t get much better for the team from Williamsburg on Friday. St. Catharine got off to a fiery start, winning games one and two 25-12 and 25-16. However, coming out the gate quickly hasn’t always been a sure sign of a win for the Patriots in purple, seeing that Rio was able to claw back and force the St. Catharine hand in games two and three of their last contest. Once again, St. Catharine struggled to put the Cumberland’s away losing game three 26-28.
After struggling in game three, St. Catharine needed a momentum swing to go in their favor to hold off a streaky Cumberland’s squad. St. Catharine was able to capitalize on multiple Cumberland’s mistakes and pull off the 25-22 win to seal the deal and bring the Patriots back to a .500 record in the Mid-South.
St. Catharine was lead on paper by the likes of Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) and her game high 13 kills. In addition, just was able to contribute defensively with her 10 digs to add to the combined 28 digs of Randa Murphy (Greensburg, Ky.) and Lauren Bowling (Florence, Ky.). Also highlighting the stat charts for the Patriots were Abbey Sorrells (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and her 33 assists and 10 digs along with Shauna Stone (Bardstown, Ky.) and her 11 kills.
The Patriots will return to Lourdes Hall October 10th at 7 PM to face the Cumberland Bulldogs in a crucial conference match.
