With conference seeding at stake, the Volleyball
Patriots (12-9, 6-4 MSC) hosted the Cumberland University Bulldogs (12-13, 3-7
MSC), Thursday night in Lourdes Hall.
Wasting no time, the Patriots got out of the gate
quick, dismantling the Bulldog defense in set number one with quick strike,
after quick strike. Led by Shauna Stone (Bardstown, Ky.) and her 10 total
kills, the Patriots were able to win big 25-12. However set number two proved
to be a bit more of a challenge; the Bulldogs were able to keep pace with
the Patriots the whole way, until eventually giving St. Catharine their second
win of the night 25-23.
After the set two struggles, the Patriots realized
that the Bulldogs were there to stay. However, the Patriot offense responded as
Abbey Sorrells (Elizabethtown, Ky.) piled up several of her game high 32
assists to allow the Patriot front row to go to work. With the offense scoring
kill after kill, the Patriot defense kept the Bulldogs off balance. Sophomore
Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.), led the team with her 13 digs, keeping the ball
alive and allowing the Patriots to pull away. The dagger for the Bulldogs came
when the Patriot “stone wall”, Casey Stone (Princeton, Ky.) and Shauna Stone,
delivered an earth shattering block that took the wind out of the Bulldog
sails. With the Bulldogs unable to find answers the Patriots took set three
25-13, sealing their sixth conference victory (school record).
The Patriots will hit the Lourdes Hall court once
more Saturday, October 12 at 12 PM, as they host the Bears of Shawnee State
University(12-10, 5-5 MSC).
