The St. Catharine Lady Patriots (11-4, 4-3 MSC) continued their winning ways Saturday as they defeated the St. Mary of the Woods Pomeroys (4-6-1) by a 3-1 score at the Barber Soccer Complex.
Every fall the St. Catharine Lady Patriots honor their seniors on senior day with the hopes to send the elder players out on a win. Fortunately for the Patriots, an impressive win over St. Mary of the Woods College did just that; the Patriots got on the board late in the first half with a goal from Courtney Hagedorn (Highland Heights, Ky.) on a penalty kick to put the Patriots up 1-0. As the half continued the St. Catharine seniors, Samantha Osborn (Ontario, Canada), Michelle Dunaway (Louisville, Ky.), and Adrienne Bishop (LaGrange, Ky.), used their experience to help keep the ball on the Patriot’s offensive end of the field and the pressure off of senior 'keeper Lindsey Vinson (Dawsonville, Ga.). Vinson kept the Pomeroys quiet for the entirety of the first half, dealing the shutout for 45 minutes. With just over six to go in the first, Chelsey Landrum (Independence, Ky.) increased the lead for the Patriots netting a shot off a pass from Paige Long (Ekron, Ky.), sending the Patriots to the half with a 2-0 lead.
Halftime belonged to the seniors as all four were honored for their dedication to a Patriots program that has flourished in their time at St. Catharine. However, their moment in the sun was short lived, with the Patriots going right back to work keeping the Pomeroys off the board for the 44 minutes of the second half. With 16 minutes remaining Mary Ezaziat (Lancaster, Ky.) netted a goal, minutes after checking in the game to increase the Patriot lead to three. Following a penalty in the box, the Pomeroys were able to sink a penalty kick to cut the lead, but it was too little too late as the Patriots went on to victory 3-1.
The Patriots will return to the Barber Soccer Complex Tuesday to battle rival Campbellsville (9-3-1, 5-2 MSC) on Tuesday, October 22nd at 2 PM.
