The St. Catharine Patriots (2-10, 0-7 MSC) looked to complete a tough stretch of games Wednesday when they traveled to the University of Rio Grande (10-1-2, 5-0-2 MSC)
The Rio Grande Red Storm came into Wednesday’s contest with a 3rd place national ranking, making them the second top five teams that the Patriots would face on the season. Knowing the task that they had ahead of them the Patriots took their defensive mindset into the contest looking to keep pace with the offense heavy Red Storm. For the first 30 minutes of the contest the Patriots defense kept Rio Grande off balance, holding them to only one goal on several shots. Leading the way for the Patriots was keeper CJ Powell with his fourth double digit save total of the season (18 on 25 shots on goal). The 18 saves for Powell surpassed his original high of 12, showing the daily improvement of the Patriot net minder. However, even with Powell’s excellent effort the Patriots were unable to fend off the Red Storm offense as they netted seven goals en route to victory.
The Patriots will hit the road Saturday to face Cincinnati Christian at 9 PM.
