The Volleyball Patriots (15-11, 9-6 MSC) took to the road once again to battle the #9 Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College (27-1, 15-0 MSC) on Wednesday.
Going into Wednesday night’s contest in Columbia, Kentucky the Patriots of St. Catharine knew that they were in for an uphill battle against a squad that defeated them 3-0 in Lourdes Hall earlier in the season. However, the Patriots have been successful at putting things behind them and planned to do just that against the Blue Raiders. With sets one and two going to the Blue Raiders by a meager two points apiece (26-24, 25-23) the Patriots were set for a rally. Leading 17-13 in the third, the Patriot net minders forced Lindsey Wilson into a timeout, which would allow the Patriots to improve their game plan and pull ahead 20-17. However, the Patriots were unable to hold off the Blue Raider attack in the final points of the set to drop set three and the game 3-0. “We have to be able to put teams away” says Head Coach Jason McDannold. “If we are going to compete with the elite in the conference we have to finish.”
The Patriots were led offensively by Abbey Sorrells (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and her 37 assists. Once again, the front row lead by Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) and Allie Southard (Louisville, Ky.) and their 19 combined kills, proved effective throughout the contest. Defensively, the Patriots were led by Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.) and Rebecca Just with a combined 30 digs. The 16 digs by Just gave here four double-doubles on the year, a team high. With the long road trip ending, the Patriots will be home again in Lourdes Hall October 29th at 7 PM hosting the Oakland City University Mighty Oaks. This will be a minor home stand before a stretch of five games in which the Patriots will be on the road beginning October 31st at Campbellsville.
