Team Purple answered back and won the deciding game of the St. Catharine College Baseball Fall World Series today, out slugging Team Gold 12-9. In a back and forth affair and 23 total hits, Team Purple put the game out of reach with a 5 run 4th inning outburst to take the lead for good.
Team Gold jumped on top in the first inning when Adrian Garcia (Anaheim, CA) singled and Danny Jimenez (Fountain Valley, CA) walked, then both advanced on wild pitches and scored on a Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, CA) single. Ty Broady (Greenville, KY) got Team Purple on the board when he singled, stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on a Lamont Calloway (Louisville, KY) groundout.
Down 3-1, Team Purple exploded for 6 runs in the top of the 3rd inning, highlighted by a Broady 2 run single, to take a 7-3 lead. Team Gold answered back with a 5 run explosion in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a Tyler Steiner (Coral Glades, FL) 2 RBI single, to go back on top 8-7.
Not to be outdone, Team Purple exploded for a 5 runs in the top of the 4th inning. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) doubled to start the inning and scored on a Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, KY) triple. Another RBI single by Broady and Calloway scored both Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, CA) and Josh Whitmer (Taylorsville, KY) who both reached on walks. Dylan Manley (Frankfort, KY) plated Calloway with a RBI single to end the scoring as Team Purple took a commanding 12-8 lead.
Freshman Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, KY) and sophomore Jonathan Reeves (Louisville, KY) both started for their squads. Jones surrendered 7 runs in 3 innings and Reeves allowed 8 runs in his 3 innings. Freshman Zach Hopkins (Nashville, TN) picked up the win, shutting down the Gold Team offense for 4 innings of 1 run baseball. Tyler Shewmaker (Shepherdsville, KY) took the loss, giving up 5 runs in .2 innings pitched.
Team Purple was led at the plate by Devine, who went 3-4 with a RBI, 2 runs and 2 triples. Broady went 2-3 with 3 RBI's, 3 stolen bases and scored twice. Bohorquez went 2-5 with a double, 3 swipes and scored 2 runs and Rosso went 2-3 with a RBI, a stolen base and scored 2 runs. Calloway went 2-4 with 2 RBI's and scored twice while adding a swipe.
Team Gold was led by Francisco Gonzales (San Diego, CA) who went 2-3 with a triple, a run and a RBI. Garcia added a 3-4 day with 2 runs and a triple and Eric Donnelly (Coral Springs, FL) went 1-2 with 2 runs.
With the series loss, Team Gold will have to perform a talent show for the student body. Time and date have yet to be determined.
