The St. Catharine Lady Patriots (1-0) tipped off their first official game Saturday afternoon when they traveled to Miami University-Middletown (0-1) to battle the Thunderhawks.

After successful scrimmages against the Thoroughbreds of Kentucky State and Mid-Continent, the Lady Patriots were ready for their 2013-2014 campaign to begin as they headed to the “Buckeye State” on Saturday. Led by a new starting line-up that included Stacie Shrout (Florence, Ky.) and Kourtney Belcher (Hustonville, Ky.), the Patriots hit the floor running, jumping out to a 53-31 first half lead. During the first half of play the Patriots hit 46.8% from the floor, along with an impressive 29.4% from behind the arc. “I thought we played well in the first half, which gave our young kids an opportunity to come in and get some valuable playing time” said Head Coach Lena Bramblett.

The second half of play remained in the control of the Patriots as they matched their first half point total of 53. Led by hot hands of Kourtney Belcher, 19 total points, and Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.), 20 total points, the Patriots were able to cruise to a 106-68 victory over the Thunderhawks. “The second half allowed us to be more aggressive, our young kids came in played hard” said Bramblett. “This was a great first game for us; we were strong at the point guard position, and that will allow us to find ways to score.” Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.), led the Patriots from the point and finished the contest with 13 assists and zero turnovers. The Patriots were able to finish the contest shooting 47.6% from the field and out-rebounded the Thunderhawks 59-33, with 25 rebounds being on the offensive side of the ball. “This game will help us with our difficult weekend coming up” says Bramblett. “We have to continue to get better, but I’m proud of these kids.”

The Patriots will hit the hardwood once more November 8th when they travel to Georgetown to face the College of the Ozarks.
