Saturday, the St. Catharine Lady Patriots hosted the Rio Grande Red Storm in a Mid South Conference Tournament game. It was the first time in program history that a Mid-South Conference Tournament Quarter-Final match was played at the Barber Soccer Complex.
With anxiety running high, the Lady Patriots were excited about their opportunity to showcase their talent in front of a purple filled home crowd. The first half became a back and forth affair as neither team could gain an advantage. Offensively, the Patriots were only able to muster three shots against a fiery Red Storm defense. However, the Patriots’ defense kept the Red Storm offense at bay as they held the Red Storm to zero shots during the first half. With the score knotted at zero the Patriots took the tie into halftime.
The stalemate continued through the majority of the second half as the Patriots and Red Storm continued their defensive pressure. With the shots-on-goal count tied at one, the Patriots took the only shot that mattered; with 28 minutes remaining Chelsey Landrum (Independence, Ky.) slotted a ball into the back of the Red Storm net off the assist from Macy Higdon (Elizabethtown, Ky.), giving the Patriots the 1-0 lead and 2-1 shots-on-goal advantage. With the game coming to a conclusion the Patriots could feel the victory, as their defense continued to keep the Red Storm off balance. When the final horn sounded the celebration began as the Patriots scored their first ever MSC Tournament victory on their home field.
With their 1-0 victory the Patriots record moves to a program best 13-6 (6-4 MSC) on the year. They advance to the Mid South Conference Semi-Final round against the Cumberland University Bulldogs. That match will take play at Lindsey Wilson College on Thursday, November 14th at 1:00pm ET (12:00pm CT) and will be followed by the second Semi-Final match at 3:30pm ET (2:30pm CT).
