The St. Catharine Volleyball Patriots (21-12, 11-7 MSC) made their mark early in the conference tournament as they defeated Shawnee State University (17-15, 9-9 MSC) in the first round 3-0.
After splitting the season series 1-1, with both teams winning at home, the St. Catharine Patriots took no chances in repeating the contest in Portsmouth, Ohio as they were able to down the Bears in three straight sets (25-22, 25-19, 25-12). Led by the hot hand of Allie Southard (Louisville, Ky.) with 10 kills and five blocking assists, the Patriots kept the Bears at bay for two close sets and pulled away in the third. Outside of Southard, three other Patriot hitters scored double digit kill totals: Casey Stone (Princeton, Ky.), Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.), and Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.). Feeding the ball to hitters, Abbey Sorrells (Elizabethtown, Ky.) racked up 44 total assists en route to the Patriot victory.
The win advances the Patriots to the semi-final round Saturday morning at 10 AM, where they will meet the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders (35-2, 18-0 MSC).
