In their last preparation for conference play, the St. Catharine men’s basketball team (3-1) took to the road to battle Wilberforce University (0-7).
The St. Catharine Patriots entered Monday night’s contest with the knowledge that Pikeville was looming just around the corner in their conference opener. However, it did not serve as a distraction, as the Patriots defeated Wilberforce in dominating fashion 90-70. After leading by only one at the half (32-31), the Patriots exploded in the second half for 58 points. “We played well the 2nd half” says Head Coach JT Burton. “We went on a 24-2 run to start the 2nd half and several of our guys, especially Romeo Lewis (Detroit, Mich.), stepped up.” Lewis finished the contest with 12 points and nailing of six of seven from the charity strip. With Omar Skinner (New Castle, Del.) doing most of the scoring (16 points), William Tolefree nailed down a double-double, scoring 13 and grabbing 10 rebounds. The Patriots forced 32 Wilberforce turnovers, 15 of which were caused by a Patriot steal, while limiting themselves to only 10 in the second half.
The Patriots will return home Thursday at 8 PM, when they open conference play against the University of Pikeville.
