The Lady Patriot basketball team (3-4, 1-1 MSC) grabbed an impressive victory on the road against the Mighty Buffaloes of Milligan College (6-3) 65-57.
Following a long Thanksgiving break the Lady Patriots were ready to hit the hardwood once more, and they didn’t waste any time picking up where they had left off. The Patriots showed their strenght early in the first half, jumping out to a six point advantage following a three point basket from Rianne Hofstraat (Netherlands) to make the score 18-12. Hofstraat’s basket sparked a wildfire of scoring for the Patriots, as they were able to pull out to an 18 point advantage (34-16) with only eight minutes remaining in the first half. Behind a strong defensive effort, the Patriots took a 38-23 advantage into the break.
With no inclination of looking back, point guard Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) took charge in the second half as she found the hands of Kourtney Belcher (Hustonville, Ky.) several times accounting for a large portion of her seven assist night. Belcher racked up a career high 18 points on the night, while Sandlin had a double-double performance with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Patriots bench outscored the Milligan non-starters 25-8, while the Patriot defense forced the Mighty Buffs into 16 turnovers for 13 points. “We played very well together as a team both defensively and offensively” said Head Coach Lena Bramblett. “Our guards are doing an extremely good job at breaking down defenses and distributing the basketball. We played well last night on the road. Everyone stepped up and contributed to the win.”
The Patriots will welcome the Milligan Buffaloes to Lourdes Hall on December 14th at 12 PM for their next contest and will look to find similar results.
