The Nautical Patriots took a dive into Barbourville, Ky. to compete in the Union College Winter Invitational over the weekend.
The St. Catharine Lady Patriots went into the weekend hoping to continue their gradual improvement that they have shown throughout the season. With Hannah Spaulding (Springfield, Ky.) being just outside of the national tournament qualification pace in the 100 Breaststroke, hopes were high for a successful weekend. Spaulding dove in early as she nailed down a fourth place finish in the 200 yard IM final with a time of 2:25.24, a whole second faster than her preliminary race of 2:26.55.
In the 500 Freestyle Martha Raley (Lebanon, Ky.) finished ahead of Union’s Dana Witheft with a time of 6:46.98. Raley followed her performance with a stellar lap in the 200 yard Butterfly, nailing down a 3:04.00, a full second better than her 3:05.70 preliminary time. Keely Taylor (Portsmouth, Ohio) flew through the 100 yard breaststroke with a 1:33.48 and the 100 yard freestyle with a 1:11.93, placing her just behind her competition.
Spaulding finished out the day for the Lady Patriots as she swam the 200 Breaststroke with a blazing 2:41.16. However, the shining moment came early in the meet when Spaulding took on the 100 yard Breaststroke and cut through the water with a 1:12.96, scoring her a top 5 finish. Spaulding’s impressive swim improved her best time by four seconds, only a mere one second away from the national tournament cut.
The Nautical Patriots will take to the water once more January 10th when they travel to Centre College in Danville, Ky. to take on the Colonels.
