The Lady Patriots (3-7, 1-3 MSC) concluded an uphill weekend Saturday as they fell 90-73 at the hands of conference foe Lindsey Wilson (12-4, 2-2 MSC).
The Lady Patriots kept things close in the opening frame of the contest with the outstanding guard play of Machera Calhoun (Fort Meyers, Fla.). In the waning minutes of the first, the Patriots tore off a 15-6 run sparked by a layup from Brooke Gee (Ashland, Ky.) off a spectacular assist from Calhoun (one of six on the night). Calhoun then followed her assist with an opportune rebound that led to a coast to coast basket, putting the Patriots within four at 34-30. The Calhoun to Gee connection continued during the ensuing possession as Gee hammered home a layup from Calhoun to cut the Raiders lead to two. With the clock winding down Calhoun would attack the basket and miss home, only to have her shot rebounded by Rianne Hofstraat (Netherlands) who would find pay dirt on the put back to tie the contest. The exclamation point for the half came in the final ticks as Lexus Edwards (Lexington, Ky.) blocked a Raider three pointer to seal a 41-38 halftime lead for the Patriots.
The second half, however, was a much different story for the Patriots as they were only able to make connection on 28% of their shots from the field. Despite the 90-73 loss the Patriots were able to out assist the Raiders 16-13 and grab 42 rebounds. In addition, the Patriots outshot the Blue Raiders at the line 78% to 72%, accounting for 11 of their 73 points.
The Patriots will return home to Lourdes Hall Thursday to face the University of the Cumberland’s (7-5, 2-1 MSC) at 6 PM in Mid-South Conference action.
