The St. Catharine Lady Patriots (3-8, 1-4 MSC) fell in a heartbreaker 75-69 to the #21 University of the Cumberland’s Lady Patriots (8-5, 3-1 MSC) on Thursday in Lourdes Hall.
The Lady Patriots grabbed the momentum late in the first half when Lexus Edwards (Lexington, Ky.) drilled a laser like three pointer to put the Patriots up one with just two minutes remaining. Following a score tying free throw by the Cumberland’s, Machera Calhoun (Fort Meyers, Fla.) went coast to coast to make an acrobatic layup, giving the Lady Patriots their largest lead of the half at two. With the time winding down in the first and the Patriots trailing by four, Lexus Edwards shifted the momentum back to St. Catharine when she drilled yet another three point basket to send the Purple Patriots to the half trailing by just one.
In the second half the Patriots came out on a scoring frenzy, as they went on a 12-0 run, taking a 49-37 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the contest. However, the momentum swings continued as the Cumberland’s tore off a 15-4 run to take the lead 56-55 with 9:40 remaining. With St. Catharine trailing by only one, Machera Calhoun took to the lane to find the bottom of the net and give the Patriots the lead once more with 1:40 remaining. Following a crucial shot clock violation by the host Patriots, Cumberland’s Lynnae Lumpkins nailed a shot from behind the arc to push the Cumberland’s lead to four. However, Calhoun led the charge once more by flying through the lane and found the net once again, cutting the lead to two with just 22 seconds remaining. However, the effort was just not enough as St. Catharine couldn’t connect on a final three pointer, causing them to fall 75-69.
The Lady Patriots will be in action once more Saturday afternoon at 2 PM when the #8 Georgetown College Tigers (9-3, 3-1 MSC) come to Lourdes Hall.
