The St. Catharine Lady Patriots (3-9, 1-5 MSC) gave the visiting Georgetown College Tigers (10-3, 4-1 MSC) all that they could handle in the final minutes of Saturday’s contest, but their comeback fell just short as the Patriots fell 72-63.
With just over six minutes remaining in the contest, it looked all but over as the Lady Patriots trailed the Tigers 60-47. However, Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) sparked the Patriot’s comeback via the three point shot by drilling a shot from behind the arc for three of her team leading 16 points off an assist from Brooke Gee (Ashland, Ky.). After two Tiger baskets Brooke Gee battled inside to find the bottom of the net off the assist from Rianne Hofstraat (Netherlands) and cut the lead to 12. On the ensuing Patriot possession Hofstraat cut the Tiger lead to single digits, nailing another shot from outside the arc.
With the Patriots trailing by just nine and the time winding down, Heather Sandlin found Sasha Ruiz-Lopez on a no-look pass for a Patriot lay-up. The Tigers, pushed the ball back up the court quickly, but could not connect on a shot in the paint, allowing Calhoun to grab the rebound and go coast to coast to cut the Tiger lead to just five with under a minute remaining. However, the Patriots would be unable to connect on their final shots to fall 72-63.
The Patriots will take to the road next Thursday when they travel to face the Red Storm of the University of Rio Grande.
