With temperatures hovering just above freezing in Kentucky, the St. Catharine College bowling team took to the beaches in sunny Florida for the Seminole Classic.
The Alley Pats found success in their last trip to Florida in 2012 when the men’s team took home a solid third place finish, and were looking to follow that up with another top five finish in 2014. The Patriot men squared off against Webber International University in their first contest, but were unable to hold off the #2 seeded Warriors. However, not all was lost for the Patriots as Jamie Wallingford (Bardstown, Ky.) cracked the top 10 overall with a sixth place finish out of 80 participants. Wallingford led the Patriots with a 208.83 average over his six games, placing him just 0.8 pins away from a top five finish. Game #3 was the pinnacle for the Patriot hurler as he raked in a 244, followed by a 235 in game #4. As a team, the Patriots brought home a six game total of 5596 with a score of 2260 in 12 Baker Games. With an overall seventh place finish, the Patriots defeated NCAA Division 1 opponents University of Florida and the Bulls of the University of South Florida.
The Lady Patriots looked to make an uphill battle a historical one, as they were seeded sixth and forced to square off against the #3 Seminoles of Florida State University. For the Lady Patriots, their dreams were made a reality as they knocked off the favorite Seminoles on their home lanes to advance to the semifinal round of the tournament to face Victory University. With a chance to advance to the finals on the line, the Patriots made a valiant effort but would come up just short in a close match with Victory. The Lady Patriots would end their Seminole classic with a solid sixth place performance, defeating Spring Hill College and NCAA Division 1 opponents Florida A & M and the University of Florida. The Patriots rolled in a six game total of 5225 and a 12 Baker Game total of 2085. Leading the way in the historical upset of Florida State, was sophomore Tiffany Webb (Louisville, Ky.) as she brought home an overall 16th place finish with a 186 average over her six games. Webb posted a team high 225 in game six with a victory sealing 200 in the win over the Seminoles.
The Patriots will hit the lanes once again this weekend, January 18th, in Addison, Illinois for the ISPBA/Kegal Midwest Collegiate Classic.
