The St. Catharine Lady Patriots (3-5, 1-6 MSC) couldn’t find any answers for the Rio Grande Red Storm (14-4, 3-3 MSC), falling 95-71.
The Lady Patriots fell victim to an early 18-6 run by the Red Storm in the first half that led to a 24-12 deficit at the halfway point of the half. With the Patriots shooting only 36% in the first half, they were unable to overcome the hot hands of the Red Storm, taking a 43-30 deficit to the break.
The second half produced better statistical numbers for the Patriots as they were able to hit their marks 52% of the time. Led by the guard combo of Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) with 12 points and Machera Calhoun (Fort Meyers, Fla.) with 14, the Patriots were able to maintain composure down the stretch to stay within striking distance. However, the Patriots were victimized by a 27-6 second chance point advantage by the Red Storm that resulted from a 54-31 Red Storm rebounding advantage.
The Patriots will remain on the road Saturday, when they take on the Shawnee State Bears at 2 PM in Portsmouth, Ohio.
