The St. Catharine Lady Patriots (3-12, 1-8 MSC) gave the #8 Tigers of Campbellsville (17-2, 8-1 MSC) all that they could handle on Thursday night.
With point guard Machera Calhoun (Fort Meyers, Fla.) missing in action for most of the contest, the St. Catharine Lady Patriots challenged the Campbellsville Tigers until the very end. Early in the first half the Tigers jumped out to a four point lead, but watched that get erased after Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Fort Meyers, Fla.) battled in the paint for two straight possessions to give the Lady Patriots a three point advantage at the 12 minute mark. However, following a timeout, the Tigers would entrench themselves in a 7-0 run before Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) sliced through paint to find the bottom of the net, cutting the lead to five with just over eight remaining. With the half winding down, Rianne Hofstraat (Netherlands) helped keep the Patriots close blocking three of her total seven blocked shots in the first half.
Following a 29-23 halftime deficit, the Patriots had a slow start in the second, falling behind by as many as 14. However, the Patriots tore off a 12-4 run capped off by a three point play from Sasha Ruiz-Lopez to cut the lead to four with just over eight minutes to play. Unfortunately, for the Patriots they were unable to slow the Tigers offense enough to regain momentum, allowing the Tigers to go on one final run and close out the contest 69-55. Even with the loss the Patriots’ defense can celebrate as they held the Tigers to zero three pointers for the first time in 176 contests.
The Patriots will return to Lourdes Hall Thursday when they host defending conference champion Cumberland University at 6 PM.
