The St. Catharine Lady Patriots (3-13, 1-9 MSC) would be unable to find the net down the stretch as they fell to the visiting Bulldogs of Cumberland University (9-9, 5-5 MSC) in Lourdes Hall on Thursday evening.
After a long stint on the road the St. Catharine Lady Patriots stormed into Lourdes Hall ready to play, jumping out to an early 14 point lead on the visiting Cumberland University Bulldogs. Led by Carol Ruiz-Lopez (Fort Meyers, Fla.) and her 10 point half, the Lady Patriots were able to take advantage of their early three for four shooting behind the arc. With just over seven minutes remaining in the half the Bulldogs were able to recapture the momentum, going on a 9-0 run before Carol Ruiz-Lopez snagged an offensive rebound in traffic, leading to a basket on the ensuing shot to keep the lead at five. However, the Bulldogs would tear off another 9-2 run to take their largest lead of the half at 34-29 with just 35 seconds remaining. As the seconds ticked off the clock Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Fort Meyers, Fla.) would cut through the lane to draw a foul and earn a trip to the charity stripe. Following two made Ruiz-Lopez free throws, the Patriots would force the Bulldogs into a quick shot that was off the mark to head into the break trailing by three at 34-31.
The Patriots were able to get out of the gate quickly once again in the second half when Machera Calhoun (Fort Meyers, Fla.) found Rianne Hofstraat (Netherlands) for two of her 11 on the night, tying the game at 36. In the minutes following, the Bulldogs would go on a 15-5 run to pull out to a 10 point advantage before Calhoun would storm through the lane to find the bottom of the net and keep the Patriots within striking distance. With just over six remaining the Bulldogs would tear off another 10-0 run to pull out to a 15 point advantage. Unfortunately for the Patriots a Sasha Ruiz-Lopez basket from Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) at the buzzer would be too little too late as they would fall 74-61.
The Lady Patriots will be in action once more Saturday at 2 PM when the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders invade Lourdes Hall for a Mid-South Conference matchup.
